Scenographer and artist Maja Nilsen will introduce you to scenographic thinking and provide a set of simple tools for creating scenographic spaces.

Scenography offers countless possibilities, so how do you define, delimit, and at the same time expand your own visual universe?

Drawing on Nilsen's experience from both large- and small-scale performing arts projects, she will guide participants through the process of developing a scenographic concept from the initial idea to a finished proposal. Which elements are essential, and which can you leave out?

The week at Rosendal Theatre will include conversations, discussions, visual inspiration, and plenty of hands-on work. You are welcome to bring an idea for a project, but you are just as welcome to attend without one.

Since 2012, Maja Nilsen has worked as a scenographer and costume designer for a number of theatres. Her collaborations with director Lisa Lie include Blue Motell (Black Box Teater/Trøndelag Teater, 2013), I Cloni (Black Box Teater, 2015), Kaspar Hauser – Die Ausgestossene können jeden augenblick angreifen! (Schauspielhaus Wien, 2016), Uår av Terje Vigen (Trøndelag Teater/Nordland Teater, 2017), Mare (Det Norske Teatret, 2019), and Vake (Black Box Teater/Dramatikkens hus, 2019).

Other productions include the dance performance Das Rotkäppchen in collaboration with choreographer Henriette Pedersen (2014), Dracula, directed by Erlend Samnøen at Brageteatret (2016), Draumkvedet, directed by Erlend Samnøen and produced by YMIST (2018), and Melancholia II with YMIST at Tou Scene, Vega Scene, and Rosendal Teater.

In addition to her work in theatre, Nilsen has completed several public art commissions, has been acquired by public collections, and has exhibited extensively both in Norway and internationally.

Among her awards and grants are the Lars Brandstrup Memorial Grant, the Trondheim Municipality Cultural Grant, and several annual government working grants for artists. Her most extensive exhibition to date was a solo exhibition at the Trondheim Kunstmuseum in 2016.
