Darkness Picnic

by DOM-

BASTARD – Trondheim International Performing Arts Festival 2025

Duration: ca. 180 min
Language: Italian. English text available
A picnic on the edge of the night, a temporary bivouac for nocturnal stories.

A picnic on the edge of the night, a temporary bivouac for nocturnal stories. Interweaving research around the gesture of walking and nomadism with the theme of the gentle inhabitation of public space, this site-specific work by DOM- invites the public to a collective exercise of rest and suspension.

Note: Change in the execution of Darkness Picnic
Due to bad weather conditions, part two of the performance, which was originally planned to take place outdoors, will instead be held indoors in Hall 2 at Rosendal Teater. The experience will still be just as atmospheric and engaging – only in slightly drier surroundings. We look forward to welcoming you!

The performance will be in Italian.
The prologue will have English subtitles, and during part two the audience will be given a script to follow along. The script will also be in English.

When night falls, the clocks stop, perception dilates, and the landscape emanates indecipherable messages, languid as the heat rises from the ground as moisture descends from the sky and tree trunks. The muslin robes settle on the grass and dark rocks, someone walks away. Nature then reveals itself in its full seductive power, calling bodies to itself, inviting them to stop and lose themselves, emitting an irresistible call to go further, to cross the threshold between dreaming and waking.

A cry to the edge of an experience from which one does not return - or if one does return, one does not have the words to recount it.

About the company:

DOM- investigates the language of performing arts, contaminating it with the Environmental Humanities’ militant approach and the issues and imaginaries of feminist and queer ecologies. Its practice revolves around the relation between bodies and landscapes, questioning the tangle of permeability, and observing how power, nature and marginality interact in the public space.

Darkness Picnic, its latest site-specific performance inspired by the iconic book and movie Picnic At Hanging Rock, invites the audience to a collective exercise of rest and suspension.
