Apartheid free zone
Theatres have a unique possibility to make visible what is marginalized or suppressed, to give voice and presence to what is silenced or difficult to articulate, and to open spaces for empathy, reflection, and action. Rosendal Teater’s ethical stance already underscores our willingness to engage actively in society by addressing systemic power imbalances. For us, an apartheid-free practice is consistent with that commitment.
By joining the Apartheid-Free Zone’s campaign, we take part in a larger collective effort for justice and freedom. Accordingly, we have developed a set of guidelines for how, as an institution, we will integrate the campaign’s principles into our day-to-day operations and programmes - through both practical steps and principled decisions, adapted to our role and capacity.
1. Boycott Israeli goods and companies, as well as avoid goods and companies that support or are complicit in violations of Palestinian rights
• The goal is to identify key products and services to boycott that can have a high impact, as well as use the ‘No Thanks’ app to aid on-going purchasing decision-making. Products currently in focus include: Pepsi Cola, Booking.com, HP, and Dell, as well as Israeli products and companies. The ´NoThanks´ app will be used to identify and avoid Israeli products. We will, like most other apartheid-free zone organisations, continue using the products and services of companies such as Google, Meta, Intel, Apple, Microsoft, Spotify, Tidal, etc. And for the purpose of accountability and to avoid boycott-washing, we find it necessary to be transparent on this point.
• This commitment does not require immediate divestment from past investments.
2. Boycott cooperation with Israeli cultural, research, and educational institutions, as well as artists/companies representing such institutions or funded by Israeli authorities or state campaigns
• We do not boycott individual artists based on nationality.
• In contract negotiations, partners must subscribe to Rosendal Teater’s ethical guidelines. If a proposed project involves Israeli cultural, research, and educational institutions, or artists/companies representing such institutions or funded by Israeli authorities or state campaigns, we can decline to enter the contract. If such conflicts emerge after a contract is signed, we reserve the right to terminate the agreement.
3. Maintain and establish cooperation with Palestinian artists and organisations
• We will continue to maintain contact with, and monitor the situation of, Palestinian artists we have collaborated with.
• We aim to support Palestinian artists through letters of intent, guest performances, residencies, and other forms of solidarity. We also strive to highlight Palestinian cultural heritage and acknowledge structural barriers imposed by occupation and blockade.
