Both Sitting Duet & The Unison Piece
by Burrows & Fargion
An intellectual and humorous double bill featuring two works by Burrows&Fargion.
Both Sitting Duet is a direct translation, note for note and bar for bar, of Feldman’s violin and piano piece For John Cage. The Unison Piece is an investigation, critique and celebration of doing things together in time, performed at a table with two electric guitars.
As part of Multiplié Dance Festival 2026 the two artists will share their oldest duo Both Sitting Duet (2002) which has been performed over 500 times across the world, followed by their most recent work The Unison Piece (2025). Their work is hard to place, blending sharp analytical depth with unexpected humour, but it has its roots in a shared love of musical forms, which they clash against an approach to performance that is at once open to audience but also anarchic and joyful.
Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion have been working together for many years, creating an internationally acclaimed body of duet work. Fargion has also written music for, and performed with, many other performance makers including Siobhan Davies, Claire Croizé, Andrea Spreafico, Mette Edvardsen, Karl Jay Lewin and Helga Arnalds. Burrows is the author of A Choreographer’s Handbook (Routledge, 2010/2024) and Writing Dance (Varamo Press, 2022) and is currently Associate Professor at the Centre for Dance Research Coventry University.
There will be an Artist Talk and Hangout at Kunsthall Trondheim after the performance
The performance is part of the Multiplié Dance Festival 2026 presented by DansiT
