Over Ævne
by Signe Becker (NO)
Questions from a reading worker
In a theatre hall at Rosendal, a bunch of theatre painters are working on several large paintings. The painters and their working process are exhibited, or staged, if you like. The work will last for eight days. The doors are open and the audience decides for themselves how long they want to witness the creation of the works. The motifs that are painted are carefully composed in advance by the artist, Signe Becker, but executed by the painters.
OVER ÆVNE is a performative work that wants to shed light on the painter and the craft tradition of painting by putting the independent artist's status into play. As a kind of living dilemma, Becker raises questions about power relations and intellectual property. Who are the servants of the work and who serves the work? Who signs the work at the end?
Signe Becker's alter ego, Cynthia, will be present in the room and with the audience. As always, she is adaptable and can change function as needed; assist the painters in their work, share their knowledge with the public, tell a joke or two - or make some coffee.
