What is Moderskipet?
– A longing for a space where the monstrosity and tenderness of the post-partum body can exist. As artists and caregivers ourselves, we experience a lack of knowledge, spaces and representation of this body in work, art, philosophy, structures and economies. The Mothership is an archive and love letter to all that this experience can teach us.
How did the piece come about?
– It was ignited by an anger over the lack of knowledge and disproportionate distribution of power. Parallel to our bodies going through transformations, we are navigating a world on fire. . Care is often individualized and hidden within “the nuclear family” and made speechless. What if the world was run by midwives, who witness a body giving birth to another every day?
What does the audience encounter?
– A sensorial archive: voices, textiles, sound. A space to enter, listen, rest—or ask questions. The audience is invited into a landscape of experiences that goes beyond language and narrative
What’s at stake?
– Care is political. It is historically carried by women and unpaid labor,. The audience can expect to be upset, touched and inspired hopefully.
Who is it for?
– Everyone who has been born. By talking from and through the postpartum body, we are in fact having a look at how we want to exist, collectively. In a world where political carelessness is destroying the fundaments of our livelihood, we want to advocate for care, play and tenderness.
What remains afterwards?
– A demand: To carve out time, space, and value for carework. We hope the audience carries this with them beyond the theatre.
