Døden i Venezia
By Ymist
As chaos unfolds and the world falters, do we act, or retreat into denial?
The world is shaking, anxiety and fear creep in. But does this actually affect us? Does it make us act? Gustav von Aschenbach in Thomas Mann's Death in Venice does what many of us do: He runs home and books a holiday to the South.
The performance explores a person who refuses to acknowledge that death has entered the arena, and who instead seeks self-deception and desire. Through an interplay of distant text, brutal choreographic material, and an alluring musical expression, this human condition is explored.
Ymist works in a theatrical language space where choreographed movement is as important as spoken words. The actor's body, voice, and physics become an artistic focal point, and the elements challenge each other rather than illustrate. Using non-dramatic, literary texts as a starting point, the goal is to give literature a body and to give the text's materiality a physical form.
Content description
This show is in development. Information about its content will be provided at a later stage. Rosendal Theatre programs work that challenges what performing arts can be, where it takes place, and who creates it. We collaborate with voices that are less frequently heard, those that are marginalised and alternative. As a result, the performances often present challenging content and expressions. If you feel the need to leave the performance partway through, we maintain a low threshold and full understanding for this. On the second floor, you will find a relaxed zone where you can retreat. You can read more about the relaxed zone and accessibility here.
