Homage au pair
By De Utvalgte
BASTARD – Trondheim International Performing Arts Festival 2025
In the welfare state of Norway, we like to think of the class society as an anachronism, even as we witness increasing economic and social stratification. Au pair means to be on equal footing: a mutually beneficial arrangement with cultural exchange as its core premise. However, the scheme has not functioned as intended. The performance reflects the dissonance between the social conscience embedded in the role of the wealthy and privileged, and the exploitation of cheap labor.
The work consists of four films that interact with live performance and music. One of the films is shown in VR and is shot from the au pair’s point of view.
In 2024, one of the films won the Gullstolen (Golden Chair) for Best Norwegian Short Film at the Short Film Festival in Grimstad.
Excerpt from the jury's statement:
Among just three people in a single room, there can exist an almost infinite network of connections, resistance, and misunderstandings. The winning film observes such a space with a flair for mischief that lends it a playful, absurd edge — twisting the film in an unexpected direction, this short masterpiece becomes a crowbar that pries open an entire Pandora’s box of cultural and class-based dynamics...
Homage Au Pair is a tribute to all the servants who keep the wheels turning.
