The Interpreters
Part 1: She always wanted to be a French actres - by Nicola Gunn (AU/NO)
A performance for your ears
Taking place almost exclusively in the dark, as an experience for our ears more than our eyes, this performance takes the shape of a playful and layered conversation that moves into digressions about beauty, conscience, making apologies and invisibility. And explores our unique relationship to the language we speak.
The Interpreters takes as its subject the dramaturgy of translation and the act of interpretation to think about language as sound and words as images. Presented in three separate installments that shift the audience experience and play with displacement of text and image, The Interpreters begins in 2022 with Part 1: She always wanted to be a French actress.
In Part 1: She always wanted to be a French actress, Nicola Gunn meets real-life translator Séverine Magois to discuss the French translation of a story she has written. How much do translators put of themselves into the translation simply by the words they choose?
Part 1 will be performed almost entirely in the dark as an aural sensory experience.
